Does Painting over Mould Kill it?
The saying might be, ‘out of sight out of mind’, but unfortunately ignoring mould and painting over it is only going to cause you grief in the long run.
It’s important to find the cause or source of the growth and kill the spores, that way you’ll be reducing the risk of it happening again.
What Happens if you Paint over Mould?
- Adhesion problems – You’ll have trouble with paint sticking. If not treated, mould spores can push coating off.
- If you’re painting over it, you’re not addressing the underlying problem and what is causing the mould.
Pre-Paint Mould Treatment
Step 1: Thorough cleaning should take place before any surface is painted. Generally, an applicator would firstly water-blast the surface.
Step 2: Apply Prepcote Surface Treatment – Globalcote’s preventative treatment which inhibits the growth of organic material such as moss, lichen or fungi.
Expert tip: If you’re applying Prepcote to your roof, concentrate on the nose of the tiles and crevices where mould spores could remain after thorough cleaning.
What Happens after Prepcote Surface Treatment is Applied?
While Prepcote Surface Treatment is a preventative treatment, it is designed to stay on your surface once it’s been applied – do not wash off.
Along with other Globalcote products, once applied and sealed, it helps to keep your surface looking new for years to come as it forms a long-lasting barrier.
Prepcote should be applied to porous surfaces where mould and fungi are more likely to grow, such as concrete or terracotta roof tiles. It is not required on metal surfaces.
